Car finance by UK city
The city you drive in changes the finance decision — ULEZ, CAZ, LEZ, commute type and used-stock supply all matter. Pick your city for a local guide.

In short
Car finance rates are not set by postcode — a lender assesses your credit profile, income and affordability the same way wherever you live. What does change locally is which car makes sense: clean air zone rules, typical commute distance, parking and insurance costs all differ by city, and those decide whether a petrol, diesel, hybrid or EV is the cheaper choice.

Does where you live change your car finance?
Not directly. UK consumer credit rules are national, and the lenders on our panel price on your credit profile, income and affordability rather than your city. Two identical applicants in Glasgow and Bristol should see the same kind of offers.
What genuinely varies is the cost of running a car in that city. Insurance is priced by postcode risk. Clean air zones charge non-compliant vehicles in some cities and not others. Commute type — dense urban stop-start versus long motorway runs — decides whether a hybrid, EV or efficient diesel is cheapest per mile. Those local factors change which car you should finance, not whether you will be approved.
Clean air zones and what they mean for your choice
| Scheme | Where | Applies to private cars? |
|---|---|---|
| ULEZ | London | Yes — daily charge for non-compliant cars |
| CAZ | England, e.g. Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Newcastle | Depends on the city's class — some charge cars, some only commercial vehicles |
| LEZ | Scotland, e.g. Glasgow, Edinburgh | Yes — penalty charges for non-compliant vehicles |
| None | e.g. Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester for private cars | No charge for private cars today |
Always confirm the current rules with the relevant council before you buy — schemes and boundaries change.
The practical rule is simple: on a four or five year agreement, a petrol car meeting Euro 4 or a diesel meeting Euro 6 keeps you compliant almost everywhere, and hybrids and EVs comply automatically. Financing an older non-compliant car to save a few pounds a month usually costs more once daily charges and weaker resale demand are counted.
How to use a city guide
- Open your city and check the clean air position first — it filters the shortlist immediately.
- Read the commuting section and match the drivetrain to your actual journeys, not the sticker price.
- Look at the popular models for that city; they reflect the body styles that suit local roads and parking.
- Run the numbers in the affordability and total cost tools, including a local insurance quote.
- Finish with a soft-search eligibility check to see what a lender would offer.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming a clean air zone blocks you from getting finance.
It does not. Zones affect which car is cheapest to run, not whether a lender will approve you.
Ignoring insurance when comparing cities or cars.
Insurance is postcode-priced and can move your real monthly cost more than the finance rate. Always quote the specific car.

Frequently asked
Are car finance rates different in different UK cities?
No. Lenders assess your credit profile, income and affordability, not your city. Local differences show up in insurance premiums, clean air charges and which cars make sense — not in the finance rate itself.
Do I need a ULEZ or LEZ compliant car to get finance?
No lender requires it, but if you drive in London, Glasgow or Edinburgh regularly, a compliant car avoids daily or penalty charges that usually outweigh any saving from an older vehicle.
I've just moved city — will that affect my application?
Only through address history. Give three full years of previous addresses so the credit check matches your file. A recent move on its own is not a problem.
My city isn't listed — can I still apply?
Yes. We arrange car finance across the whole of the UK. The city guides cover the largest markets first; the eligibility check works from any UK address.
